Eric Devey Music

Lessons
Lessons are available online or in person, location permitting. Time in lessons is spent in three roughly equal parts: technique, etudes, and repertoire. In each of these parts, ear training is developed alongside theory and reading music. Eric has an ability to not only show students how to build strong practice habits, but to share the characteristics of songs, artists, and music in general that are most inspiring. He works to help students want to play and listen to music, rather than feel obligated to.
Jazz
Students who want to explore improvisation will be taught to simultaneously practice with open creative expression and structure; structure from studying recordings, guided call & response, and music theory. Jazz students will also learn jazz-specific technique and etudes.
Song Writing, Composition, Theory
Eric has been performing his original compositions for over fifteen years and has a strong understanding of composition techniques and the music theory behind them. Like improvisation, composition students will be encouraged to write with open creative expression alongside structure and music theory.
In addition to writing music and lyrics for his own solo album The Year without a Summer, his writing and arranging for trumpet can be heard on Rachel Sumner's Grammy nominated single "Radium Girls," both of which can be found on the media page.
